It was completed in 1984 by him and his research group in the University of Helsinki. Originally SURVO 76 was made in conversational (menu-based) form. The editorial approach was introduced in 1979. SURVO 76 was implemented on the Wang 2200 minicomputer. The work on SURVO 84 started in 1984 on the basis of SURVO 76 by using the interpretative Basic language. This was the the frrst microcomputer version and could be run on the Wang PC only. The current SURVO 84C system was originated in 1985. From the user's viewpoint it is much like SURVO 84 and it is also highly compatible with SURVO 76.

To overcome this problem, knowledge is to be entered in a declarative maner rather than in the rules. This was implemented by designing a specific language for the kind of knowledge we need, this language being represented with the system's working memory syntax. A general statistics-based problem solver implemented as a set of rules was designed for interpreting and controlling the domain knowledge. Facts are easy to add or modify, and they can be automatically checked for consistency. With the previous definitions, it is possible to use decision trees where nodes are methods (generic tasks) and leaves are module (specific tasks).
