But most business simulations are not playable. They are simulated purely for understanding behavioral results of a new process or strategic environment. Simulation becomes another method of analysis. Usually many different simulation runs will be made of a nonplayable simulation, to explore a space of possibilities, and the results will be summarized in graphs or statistics.

Some enterprise architecture efforts include modeling the goals and strategies. If an existing motivation model already exists, the existing goals and strategies can be reused for the enterprise architecture. In organizations that have created an enterprise architecture, it is useful to tie new business models to the existing enterprise architecture. Model elements in a business model are traced to model elements in an EA model to show how the focused business model fits in the larger enterprise whole.

Why do we care about modeling business motivation? As you will recall from Chapter 1, business models in general are used for eight purposes. Six apply to business motivation modeling: communication, persuasion and selling, training and learning, analysis, managing compliance, and knowledge management and reuse. Some businesses build motivation models of their strategy and then use those models to communicate their strategy across their organization and to stakeholders outside. Sometimes that communication involves persuasion of reluctant parties: for example, employees who are skeptical of the new strategy, or suppliers who are concerned about what the new strategy means for them.
