It must be stipulated that, in adapting the histoire tragique to the cause of women, Gournay is, up to a point, taking her cue from her predecessor, who dedicated his Discours as a whole “À l’honneur, et exaltation de l’Amour et des Dames” [To the honor and exaltation of love and ladies]. 3 Rather, they lead to a conclusion that Gournay appears to have shared with modern feminism—namely, that to celebrate women in the context of courtly love, as after all was regularly done, is a very different matter from promoting their interests as human beings.

And instead of being punished, she punishes herself—and the patriarchal world in the process— for not having paid attention to that voice sooner. Neither the story itself nor Gournay’s development of it would necessarily have made the Promenade a natural candidate for dedication to Montaigne, who disapproved of romantic fiction and whose attitude to women is generally taken to have been equivocal, at best. Nevertheless, the very title, supported by various direct addresses to Montaigne throughout the text, resoundingly proclaims the Promenade to be his, even as the dedicatory epistle explains the attribution in terms hinting at an ambivalence within their relation unknown to Gournay herself.
