Today there are probably close to 20,000 WDS and EDS systems in the world, used in a wide range of applications. Since 1972 the discipline has enJoyed its own special Journal - 'The International Journal of X-ray Spectrometry'. The annual 'Denver Conferences' on Advances in X-ray Analysis, first established in 1957, have gone from strength to strength, and have provided a much needed vehicle, both in XRF and XRD, for discussion and presentation of new ideas.

For a while, the superior sensitivity of the WDS system gave unsurpaasable competition, but the introduction of the secondary target EDS system in 1973, greatly enhanced the rather poor sensitivities exhibited by most contemporary EDS systems. As with the early competition between UVE and XRS, both WDS and EDS instruments have now carved out for themselves a special segment of the application market. Today, one hears less of the sometimes almost violent discussions of the early 70's as to the relative merits (in reality it was generally demerits) of WDS and EDS systems.
